Paddlers for Life Sixth Season.
March

'Down and Ready' Day 17th. March, 2013
Paddlers for Life members met at Levens Village Institute to prepare for the new season.

Roz led the day and had clearly put a lot of thought and preparation into the meeting. The primary purpose of the day was to inform new members about what to expect on a typical paddling day. The aim was to ensure they knew what to wear, paddling procedures including getting the boats out, organising crews, preparation for exercise, paddling commands and the many aspects of safety that Paddlers for Life has in place to ensure paddlers are safe.

Regular paddlers helped Roz explain different roles within the team and a paddling crew with Peter, Jane and Diet describing the 'helm' role and Lynn explaining about 'stroke pair'.
It was also a chance for regular paddlers to reaquaint themselves with what we do and meet old friends and new over a fantastic selection of food in a Jacob's Join.
The day finished with a 'friendly' quiz to review what we had learned in the day deftly chaired by Roz as paddlers practised their inclusive and non competitive ethos!

It was an excellent day and should help new and regular paddlers to fit into the well-oiled crew that is Paddlers for Life, Windermere.

Thanks to Roz and all paddlers for their participation, support and sharing the wonderful food.

We also took the time to wish a very special 'Happy Birthday' to Sandra
for our first get together since her birthday.

Sandra is a founder member and was instrumental in seeking out
our striking paddling venue at Low Wood Bay.

Tattoo Fundraising Day

Sue organised this fundraising day in Chorley.
Ian and Claire, local tattooists aimed for a fun day where people could get a little 'pink'
tattoo.

Sue says" What a great day. There was a steady stream of people all day visiting the Pink day.
Ann was the first customer of the day, and she was so brave no screams came from the room.
A total of £1145 was raised on the day, an awesome result.
(This will increase as some people have booked in over the next two weeks.)
The local press arrived first thing and took a picture of Ann waiting for her tattoo, so hopefully we will feature in this weeks Chorley Guardian.
"

While travelling on their Hawaiian Adventure Sue and Peter met a fellow team of cancer survivor paddlers.
They paddle outrigger canoes instead of dragon boats but clearly have as much fun as we do!

Looks like Paddlers for Life's next boat purchase might be an OC4 or OC6 Hawaiian style outrigger canoe!

Paddlers for Life, Windermere held their pre-season water confidence session 23rd. February, 2013.

Sixteen paddlers, including several new members, met at Kendal's Lakes Leisure Pool.
Louisa, Megan and Nick explained appropriate clothing for paddling safety, use of Buoyancy Aids, the 'Buddy' system and some simple things to do when in the water to keep warm and support each other.
Many paddlers ended the session with a 'confidence boosting' dip under an upturned canoe as well as a controlled capsize.

Sian Lewis's Abseil Fundraising.
Paddlers for Life acknowledged Sian Lewis's fantastic fund raising efforts at Trinity School in Carlisle at a celebration assembly.
In June 2012 Sian, and many fellow students, friends and a few intrepid paddlers, abseiled 140 feet down Carlisle Civic Centre
.
This was made possible through Sian's initiative and organisation and the wonderful efforts of her colleagues
both in doing the abseil and chasing up the sponsorship and contributions.

Judy and Barbara arranged the presentation.

The heads, tails, drums and other dragon boating equipment were displayed for the Year 11 and Year 12 groups. Sian, now in Year 12, arranged the fund raiser in June 2012. It was well supported by many of her fellow students and friends.

Today's presentation was Paddlers for Life's big 'Thank You!'

Barbara eloquently explained what Paddlers for Life is all about and the students were shown the video which encapsulates our wonderful activities and purpose. Judy, Janet and Nick provided backup.

Sian presented a cheque to Paddlers for Life for the brilliant total £2518-77p.

This is a truly amazing figure showing the fantastic efforts of Sian and her friends.

Ever thoughtful, Barbara presented Sian with a bunch of flowers to express our gratitude for this stupendous result, as well as 'Thank You' certificates for the abseilers and chocolates for the students to share.

Trinity School are rightfully proud of this magnificent effort by their students.

It would be great if some of the students take up Barbara's invitation to come and paddle with us.

Another wonderfully successful Silverdale Coffee Morning, January 2013.

Members dug themselves out of drifts in Ulverston!
But there was too much snow in Broughton-in-Furness.

While other members travelled from Salford, Chorley, Kendal, Lancaster, Morecambe, Penrith and Carlise to help out at Silverdale's Gaskell Hall.
Mags' organisation and preparation and the kind help and support of Silverdale Coffee Morning regulars as well as the generous Silverdale community helped us raise £741-14p which included a wonderful £60 of donations.

A big thank you to everyone for all their efforts under challenging weather conditions!
